Developing and Implementing a Foundation Asset Allocation Policy

As we saw in the previous chapter, the main goal of a foundation's investment policy is to ensure that it has the resources to achieve its mission. Since most foundations have perpetual lives, this discussion assumes that situation.

The first requirement for translating an investment policy into action is an asset allocation policy, a statement of how to allocate the portfolio among a number of defined asset classes. We can clarify the issues involved by reviewing some lessons from the world of tax-exempt corporate pension plans.
